It is a generally accepted fact that the Romans and Julius Caesar brought wine to Britain, whether or not the vine was actually grown here is still a debatable subject. What is certain is that by the middle ages, Vineyards were almost definitely grown in a significant number of English Institutions, particularly in the South. It wasn’t until the 18th and 19th century that Britons really began to experiment with wine and various grapes. The only known gap in British history where wine was not produced significantly is from the end of World War 1 to the end of the Second World War. Since then, British vines has grown exponentially. However, the ever-changing climate within Britain means that the Vineyard industry will never reach mass production similar to that of France, but still stands as a well matured, indigenous industry within Britain with over 400 vineyards to choose from.
